Sikaflex®-291i is a multi-purpose product for marine applications. It is suitable for forming elastic, vibration resistant joints and can also be used in a variety of internal and external sealing applications. Sikaflex®-291i has excellent adhesion to common materials used in marine construction such as wood, metals, metal primers and paints (2-component), ceramics and plastics (GRP, etc.).Sikaflex®-291i should not be used to seal plastics that are prone to cracking under environmental stress (e.g. Plexiglas, polycarbonates, etc.). The product is intended for use by professional applicators. Tests should be conducted with actual substrates and exact application conditions to ensure adhesion and compatibility of materials.
Surface preparation
Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from grease, oil and dust. Surface preparation depends on the specific nature of the substrates and is critical for a long-term durable bond. Recommendations for surface preparation are available in the most recent version of the appropriate Sika® primer table. Please note that these recommendations are based on experience and should be confirmed by testing on actual substrates.
APPLICATION
Sikaflex®-291i can be applied at temperatures between 10 °C and 40 °C, but changes in reaction time and application properties should be taken into account. The optimum substrate and sealant temperature is between 15 °C and 25 °C.
Sikaflex®-291i can be applied with a hand, pneumatic or electric gun.
Finish
Treatment and finishing must be carried out within the skin formation time of the material. The use of Sika® Tooling Agent N is recommended. Other finishing products should be checked for suitability/compatibility before use.
Removal of residues
Wet Sikaflex®-291i can be removed from tools and equipment with Sika® Remover-208 or other suitable solvent. Once cured the material can only be removed by mechanical means. Hands and exposed skin should be cleaned immediately using the special cleaning wipes Sika® Cleaner-350H or other suitable industrial hand cleaner and water.
Do not use solvents on the skin.
Paint
Sikaflex®-291i can be dyed after skin formation. The effect can be improved if the surfaces are prepared beforehand with Sika® Aktivator-100 or Sika® Aktivator-205. If the paint has to be put into an oven (> 80 °C), optimum results are obtained if the sealer has been fully cured beforehand. 1-component polyurethane and 2-component acrylic dyes are usually suitable.
The compatibility of the paints should be checked beforehand by conducting preliminary tests under actual application conditions. The elasticity of paints is generally more limited than that of sealants. This may lead to cracking of the paint on the surface of the sealant.
